Well this is timely. During our latest podcast episode released just this week, one of the discussions that came up was the search for a solid field watch featuring Arabic numerals all around the dial. It’s a very specific look but one that Timex nails with the new Timex Expedition North Titanium Automatic. We’ve long considered Timex to be an absolute darling of ours here at TBWS and this new watch looks just like something we’d fall in love with. Plus, it’s always great to take a closer look at a solid sub-$500 watch to cleanse the palate after analyzing some of this week’s more expensive releases.

For many, Timex will always be recognized as a brand that brought us the mighty Expedition series—a collection that still offers some of the best, durable outdoorsy watches. Naturally, this collection has just been expanded with the Timex Expedition North Titanium Automatic. The first thing that stands out to me here, besides full-titanium 41mm case, is the presence of a screw-down crown. I can’t explain why, but to me it seems so difficult to find this feature in “field watches”. Really, the only example that comes to mind is the Seiko Alpinist lineup. I know it’s nit-picky but I’m thrilled to see this as an added feature in a budget-minded titanium Timex.

Overall the look is utilitarian and rugged, with texturing throughout the dial and raised luminous markers. The hands are slightly baton-shaped and besides the mountain logo at 12 o’clock, there’s really nothing flowery about this watch. I just wonder about the 41mm size, when a ton of field watch enthusiasts are probably looking for something sub-40mm. Then again, Timex isn’t really here to please enthusiasts. They’re here to sell watches. Timex rounds this out with what they call a “revolutionary Ecco™ DriTan™ leather strap that uses water-saving technology.”

Overall I think it would be cool to spend some hands-on time with the Timex Expedition North Titanium Automatic to see how well the size plays out. 41mm does concern me but maybe this’ll turn out to be a model that expanded to include smaller sizes. Who knows. You can read more about the watch on the official Timex site.

  1. Hello Michael,

Great review of the Expedition North® Titanium Automatic 41mm Eco-Friendly watch.

However; the Timex Group can not seem to get their Supply and Demand game on. The watch inventory quickly sold out. The company can not even provide a projection of when more of these watches will be available. Customer Service is a complete joke as their oversea’s staff does not have command of the English language. Would you have an insider who can provide some insight on when these watches will be available again? May thanks, Richard Lambert, [email protected]

  2. Maybe it’s time to update the review of the Timex Expedition North Titanium?

Just received from Timex, the recycled fabric strap watch.

After hand winding to get it started, I pulled the crown out to the third position and the second hand was hacked…stopped completely. The Citizen/Miyota caliber 8215 doesn’t have this capability, which leads me to believe that this has the Citizen/Miyota 8315 caliber movement.

Would you be able to confirm?

    Thanks.
