Ever since TAG Heuer revamped their chronos recently and debuted that cool “Glassbox” design, I’ve really started to pay more attention. Watches like the new TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper and the Carrera Chronograph 39mm make me wish I got into the brand sooner. They just seem more attractive lately. Now for 2024, TAG Heuer has announced another new model that makes use of the Glassbox design while calling back to the Heuer Dato references of the past. It’s looking incredibly clean, with a deep teal green dial that features circular brushing. It’s the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph “Dato”.

The first thing you’ll probably notice on this watch is just how simplified it is for a chronograph. Just like an older Heuer Dato, TAG opted to move the date window to 9 o’clock and there’s a single subsidiary dial at 3 o’clock for the 30-minute counter. I’m liking this a little more than the recent Skipper revival, since there are fewer instances of excess text throughout the piece. This definitely seems to be a watch that should be experienced in person. That shade of green probably looks killer underneath the huge Glassbox crystal design.

For the movement, TAG Heuer went with the Caliber TH20-07. It’s got an 80-hour power reserve, 33 jewels, and seems relatively well-finished. One thing that might feel strange for some collectors is the lack of a primary running seconds function. From what I can tell, the central seconds hand only runs when the chronograph is activated, so when you aren’t using it, it would be hard to tell if the watch is running at all. It wouldn’t bother me but that’s something to consider, along with the fact that there’s no sub-dial for hours.

I think some watch enthusiasts might feel that this is a little steep for a chronograph with such limited functions. This isn’t a limited edition and I’m thinking that street price might be a bit lower later down the line. For me, however, the most polarizing aspect is the dial color and I’d like to see TAG Heuer announce later variants with more versatile colorways.
