It’s always exciting to witness an unexpected release from one of your favorite brand contacts fly into your inbox on a Friday. I don’t have “special access,” I didn’t see this coming for months, and I certainly haven’t handled this new diver in the metal. But this is the kind of watch I really like to put out there as soon as I can if I have a chance. From one of the several Rick Marei ventures active today—the brand that brought us the Military last year—we’re getting another new limited dive watch that probably won’t last in stock past pre-order. In collaboration with Poseidon Diving Systems, Synchron has now just announced the limited edition Poseidon Ice Diver.

Pulling much of it’s influence from the Synchron Military diver released for the brand’s 25th anniversary, the Synchron Poseidon Ice Diver takes the popular format and updates it to pay tribute to the Swedish dive equipment company. We saw something similar with the Aquadive 100 GMT Poseidon Limited Edition in 2019 as well. And it’s starting to look like a co-branding practice this family of brands has completely perfected. Furthermore, Synchron states that this new model is “currently being tested and worn in arctic diving conditions by the elite divers of the Swedish military, who also informed a few of its key design elements.”

This new Ice Diver deviates slightly from the “legendary” watch Synchron paid tribute to last time. Most notably, we get what I think is a more legible handset with a big, Ploprof-style minute hand in Poseidon’s yellow brand color (looks like the seconds hand gets the treatment, too). Speaking of the hands, there will apparently be a production split where 500 of the watches come with black color touches on the seconds and minutes hands, while the other 500 feature the same with white coloring. The bezel in also now an elapsed-time variant instead of the countdown version. Personally, these are already two features that might make the watch more mass-appealing. And finally, like we’ve seen with companies like Aqualung, we get a cool brand medallion at the bottom right-hand corner of the dial.

Another update comes to us on the movement side of things. Unlike the Synchron Military with it’s Elabore grade ETA movement, the Synchron Poseidon Ice Diver comes with a La Joux-Perret caliber LJP-G100 Swiss automatic. It feels like there’s been an uptick in the popularity of these LJP movements recently and I’m not complaining, especially considering the 68-hour power reserve. La Joux-Perret’s parent company, Citizen, is in a great position to sell and circulate these movements to interesting brands outside of the Swatch Group space.

Notice something just now? That’s right, the pre-order and general release prices are exactly the same as what we got with the Synchron Military 2021 release. I applaud Synchron for doing this at a time when we’re seeing brands everywhere raising prices and in a watch that arguably has an upgraded movement. At that $990 pre-order price, it’s incredibly tempting and like I said before—it probably won’t last long. Congrats, Synchron. This is sure to be another fun, successful release.

The Synchron Poseidon Ice Diver is available for pre-order now.
