Introducing The New Casio Clean Military G-Shock Series

By: Michael Penate

For spring 2017, Casio G-Shock has announced some new additions to the DW5600 family of watches. Unlike the standard models, these new versions feature updated colorways and a look that’s a little more simplified. I’ve recommended the DW5600 a few times on our podcast and even picked it as one of my favorites back in our watches under $65 episode. While I can’t exactly understand what kind of “Military” designation Casio is going for here, the watches look fun and a little different. Best part? Pricing starts at just $99.

Usually when it comes to Casio G-Shock, you have to dish out a little more for non-standard colorways. If the base price is any indication however, these pieces could be an affordable way to get all the G-Shock goodness on your wrist with an extra splash of color. Personally, I think I’d go for the white one myself.

All of the watches feature a durable 42.8mm resin case, stripped down aesthetics, 200 meters of water resistance, and the unmistakable durability that’s built into all G-Shock models. It’s a testament to their “Triple 10” design concept I mentioned in Episode 13 of our podcast. There’s a reason these watches have endured for so long and it’s great to see Casio testing out some new and colorful tweaks with one of their most classic models.

Other features include an EL backlight, countdown timer, 12/24 hour time formats, and a 1/100th second stopwatch function. A multi-function alarm and flash alert functions are also built in and that’s pretty much all you need in a great G-Shock when you consider all of the other standard features.

While this might be seen as somewhat of a “fashion forward” approach to product strategy, these new models will undoubtedly pull in some new fans for G-Shock. At times I’ll admit that the off-the-shelf DW5600 doesn’t exactly scream “style.” But really, it doesn’t have to and I love that the original has remained unchanged for the most part. Still, I can appreciate that these newer versions serve up a different, fun, and colorful evolution of one of the most enduring designs in wristwatch history. So tell us what you think! The new Casio Clean Military G-Shock series watches will be available at the beginning of May 2017. Think one of these will find its way into your watch box anytime soon? • Hey Jeff, I agree. Really stripped down JDM-ish look to these. Love it. I should mention that these won’t be available until the beginning of May 2017 🙂 I’ve updated the post. Thanks for reading!
