Oh, weird watch brand collaborations. There’s definitely no shortage and for the most part you won’t see many of them brought up on the TBWS site. But every once in a while something comes along that just warms your heart, and that’s exactly how I feel about the new Casio G-Shock Rubik’s Cube GA-2100 Limited Edition. Set to be released this month on February 9th, the UK exclusive builds upon Casio’s popular, octagonal GA-2100 series and features an interchangeable bezel option and the classic, Rubik’s Cube puzzle pattern throughout the dial. While it’s a big departure from the pseudo-Royal Oak vibes that attracted many to the series, I think this might be a subtle hit for watch and cube collectors alike.
Yeah, you heard me right. Cube collectors. I’ve got a dirty little secret. I casually picked up speed cubing during the pandemic and I’ve had to be mindful about making sure the hobby doesn’t take hold of my collection-obsessed personality. I mean sheesh, I’m already three speed cubes deep so I’ve got to watch it and just make sure that I focus on learning new algorithms instead. That’s all to say that while the G-Shock Rubik’s Cube GA-2100 Limited Edition does appear to be a strange release occupying the fringes of watch collecting interests, it does intersect with a hobby that also ropes in a different set of collectors. You should see some of the insane puzzle collections on Reddit’s r/Cubers.

Asian sites are showing a mass market (but also limited?) release of this without the cube scheduled for February 25, 2022. I pre-ordered one from Japan and have also inquired about pre-ordering one at a localish G-Shock AD. (Best 3×3 time: 47s using a modified version of the 7-Step Solution.)
