As we step into the age of mixed-platform digital releases, I find myself staring at my computer monitor at another soft release from Casio / G-Shock. The DW5600 series from G-Shock is legendary. The DW5600NASA20 is a new release from G-Shock that “pays homage to NASA” (National Aeronautics and Space Agency).

Mostly pure white, the DW5600NASA20 is as clean as the Columbia Laboratory on the ISS. It features the old red NASA logo prominently above the display. There are some other interesting unique features as well. The backlit display shows a rendering of the Moon. The strap is printed with “National Aeronautics and Space Agency” on the tail and the American flag on the end-keeper.

The American flag on the end keeper really stood out to me. The flag over white is classic NASA. I remember the American flag paired with the old NASA logo on the port-side wing of Challenger. The memories as we watched the disaster on TV in our elementary school classroom are still vivid. My Dad consoled me, explaining that pushing innovation comes at a cost. Later that year, my mother sewed an American flag and NASA patch onto a white nylon jacket for my 1986 Halloween costume.

NASA continued to press on and innovate. A generation later I read “space” books to my kids. I’ll take notice of what watches are on present-day astronauts’ wrists during a mission. It’s not the Speedmaster that I see, it’s a mostly G-Shocks for the non-EVA (Space-walk) parts of the mission.

The fate of the G-Shock NASA DW5600NASA20 will be interesting to follow. Will this collaboration fall into the same category of other NASA licensed items that oversaturate the t-shirt section at Target? Or will this 5600 series be something more than just another colorway? The Casio / G-Shock website temporarily crashed after this model lunched. It’s not listed as a limited edition, but I wouldn’t expect it to be around forever.
