While I’m more of the sporty mil-spec-watch type, I know a beautiful watch when I see it. So far, today’s new releases have been really strong over at the Tudor and Grand Seiko camps, and I think they’ve stolen the start of the show. One of these killer new releases is the Grand Seiko SBGW314, a limited edition watch that’s meant to pay tribute to the early days of the brand while offering some modern touches. Of course, we get some of the design inspiration coming from nature. In this case, we’re talking about a starry night sky.
Back in 1960, Grand Seiko introduced the first Grand Seiko, and it was the kind of watch that set the stage for what would become an iconic brand. Now at Watches & Wonders 2024, Grand Seiko is paying homage to its roots with a special limited edition in rose gold with a starry dial.
The Grand Seiko SBGW314 looks like a stunning showstopper that seamlessly combines rose gold with high-end dial work. Its navy blue dial, adorned with a mesmerizing shimmer, is meant to evoke the enchanting beauty of a starry night sky.
Encased in 18k rose gold, the SBGW314 has a modern yet refined 38mm diameter, 45.7mm lug-to-lug length, and 10.9mm thickness, along with Grand Seiko’s distinctive 19mm lug width (sorry nerds). While it may lack the angular lugs of later models, it’s this kind of meticulous case finishing that I think exemplifies the hallmark precision of Grand Seiko.
Adding a contemporary touch to its vintage-inspired design, the watch comes with a navy blue leather strap, complemented by a more retro brown leather option. And, of course, true to Grand Seiko’s nature-inspired aesthetic, the dial pays homage to the celestial wonders with its deep indigo tones, accentuated by gleaming gold hands and indices.
Powering the SBGW314 is the manual-winding caliber 9S64, with a nice 72-hour power reserve. This movement ensures optimal accuracy, gradually adjusting torque as the mainspring unwinds. Limited to just 50 pieces, this 38mm rose gold beauty is priced at $26,500.
