Autodromo Releases New Brian Redman Edition Prototipo In DLC

I’m not really much of a car guy. There…I said it. However, the connection between automotive sports and watchmaking is so strong that the two hobbies will always intertwine no matter what you’re into. Autodromo has made a name for themselves by producing some of the coolest racing-inspired watches around at prices that are easy to swallow. One of their most enduring models is the Prototipo chronograph and today, we’re looking at a new version that was just recently announced. Here is the Autodromo Brian Redman Edition Prototipo chronograph in black DLC.
While I won’t pretend to have a real grasp on the history involved with this specific era of motor racing, I will mention that the watch is inspired by the Porsche 908 Redman used at the Nurburgring in 1969. The watch, like the car, features the same red and white Austrian color scheme with accented green on the central chronograph seconds hand.
Limited to just 50 numbered pieces, the Autodromo Brian Redman Edition Prototipo chronograph features a bead-blasted and black DLC coated case and a trusty Seiko VK63 Chronograph Hybrid Meca-Quartz Movement. It’s a three-register chronograph as opposed to the original Prototipo chronograph, which is something I’m sure many will appreciate as well. The case measures 48mm x 42mm, is 11.5mm thick, and provides 50 meters of water resistance. The coolest feature? True mechanical reset on the chrono function together with that sweet panda dial.
Overall, I think this new DLC version will tick a lot of boxes for a few people. I could’ve done without the “Brian Redman” print on the dial but that’s a small issue. The watch comes on a black leather rally-style strap and is priced at $775 (excluding VAT). What do you guys think? Too much? While I love drooling over old Heuer Monacos and Autavias, I’ve never really considered adding a true “racing” watch to the collection. Still, the Prototipo is appealing and I’m happy to see that Autodromo is still taking steps to work with it since its introduction in 2013.

Not sure how I feel about the DLC coating on this particular watch to be honest, but DLC at this price point is nice. Love the Mecaquartz movement, and the more Prototipos exist, the better.
